Venetian Masks
Hand carved in Hibiscus by traditional icon carvers in Bali.
Hibiscus is a flower which in Bali never stops growing or flowering. The result is a substantial tree within 5 years which grows everywhere in Bali. It is very flexible and was used until the 1970s to provide shafts for ponies and traps. It has light sapwood and a beautiful green or yellow heartwood and is a wonderful carving timber. These masks produced from it are spectacularly beautiful.
Masks come in a a wide range of types; some have dragonflies, leaves, frogs, turtles, dolphins. They are all beautiful with sinewy fronds and openings as pictured. Please contact davidgladden@me.com if you want a certain type and we will show you what we have.
Our masks make an interesting addition for a wall or cabinet having an integral hanger at the back of the mask. On the reverse it is still possible to see the carvers marks made in the process of the production of the mask.
